Smells like: Jail Bait

So in my retail class today we were "learning" about how business' set up their stores to take advantage of store size, merchandise display, customer funnelling, and all other wonders that are the retail world. We had an activity (no, I'm not in grade three) where we had to come up with an appropriate store layout, using the same size of store, for different types of stores. Ours, a high end furniture store, was joined by the main staples of any mall; sports merchandise store, book store, and tween clothing store.

We had to talk about the lighting, smell, music, and overall atmosphere we were going for. To give you an example of what I THINK our prof was looking for I'll describe ours. It was laid out in a loop type format with different sections located in the different corners of the store with living room stuff in the middle. The smell of the store would be the typical "fresh leather" (no not dead cow smell you evil vegetarians) with a side of "home" smell. Lighting would be just less than a "typical" indoor amount of light with spotlights making which ever article was the focal point of that room stand out. Music would be of a classical maybe jazzy nature. We also kicked around the idea of taking a survey and playing the "choice" of whatever demographic was the most populated in the store at any given time.

The Tween store group was last to present and this is what they came up with. The entire class was silent.

The store layout would be of a main aisle coming down with branches kinda like a set of ribs (okay, sounds fine so far... the 'ribs' comment was weird but I could picture it). The music would be "the kinda music those kids listen to" (ummm okay). There would be manikins dressed in the clothes to show what is available in the store (great idea), some with their shits on and their pants around them on the floor (what did she just say?), and it will smell like jail bait. (WHAT DID SHE JUST SAY!!!!)

That was it. This is how she finished the presentation "it will smell like jail bait". The ENTIRE class had no idea how to react. It was honestly the most shocked I have ever been in a class. SMELLS LIKE JAIL BAIT!!!! unreal
